LI-DOG is pleased to announce that we will be hosting our next LI-DOG Pack Walk™ at beautiful Sands Point Preserve, the 216-acre former estate of the Guggenheim family! Our Pack-Walks – guided, group on-leash dog walks – are a great way for both you and your dog to socialize, while enjoying some of Long Island’s most beautiful parks!

(Please note: This replaces our scheduled LI-DOG Pack Walk™ at Old Westbury Gardens during the Fall Dog Festival as that event has been cancelled.)

Please join us for the LI-DOG Pack Walk™ at Sands Point Preserve on Sun., October 25th starting at 11:30 AM. (Please arrive 15 minutes early, so we can start the walk on time.) This dog-friendly park preserve features multiple hiking trails on 200 acres of woods, beautiful lawns, a pond, fields and great views of the Long Island Sound! Please be aware that some of the trails may be a bit steep at times and have roots and rocks.

We anticipate the Pack Walk™ will take about an hour, but there will be opportunities to make the walk shorter for those who wish to do so.

PLEASE NOTE: Dogs are NOT allowed on the beach and must remain leashed at all times. Please do not bring Flexi Leads as we’ll be walking in groups and people and dogs can get tangled. Also, please bring water and poop bags – as clean up is a must.

ALSO PLEASE NOTE: There is an admission charge to Sands Point Preserve of $15 per car unless you are a member of the Sands Point Preserve Conservancy. For more info about Sands Point Preserve including how to become a member of this dog-friendly park treasure, go to the Friends of Sands Point Preserve.

Please join LI-DOG for our first-ever Pack Walk™ at Edgewood-Oak Brush Plains Preserve in Deer Park! Edgewood-Oak Brush Plains is a state-owned, 843-acre nature preserve situated within the towns of Babylon, Huntington and Islip. It was the site of the former Edgewood State Hospital.

The trails and paths in the preserve are ideal for hiking, biking, jogging, birding and, of course, dog walking! Old Commack Road, a concrete 1.6- mile road that runs north-south and is now part of the preserve’s trail network, is great for jogging and biking, especially for families with children. There are also many nice, flat, pine needle-covered trails that are great for dog walking.

Due to social distancing guidelines and because parking at the preserve is limited, we are limiting this Pack Walk to 30 people.

We’ll gather for our LI-DOG Pack Walk™ —a guided group on-leash dog walk–at the gazebo near the parking lot. We’ll begin our walk at the Main Entrance and head straight up a dirt road, passing a field where they fly model airplanes. Please be mindful of the planes. Once we pass the “airfield”, we’ll cross over the cement road and continue straight on a nice wide dirt path. We’ll walk about half mile on that trail before we make our first left turn.

Once we turn, the trail will narrow although it is still easily passable for a person and a dog. This path is mostly dirt, covered with pine needles. On our walk, we’ll pass several cement barricades, which are there to stop people from riding dirt bikes and ATV’s on the trails. After we walk through the pine trees about a half mile, we’ll make a left after the second barricade. This trail also is dirt with pine needles and is mostly straight.

Once we hit the T crossing, we’ll turn left again and after about 1,000 feet we’ll make a slight right to return to the cement road. Once we hit the road, we will make a left and head back to the main trail.

The walk will cover about two miles and will take a little over an hour.

PLEASE NOTE: While there may be off-leash dogs on the trail, dogs must be kept on leash on the LI-DOG Pack Walk™. Please don’t forget to bring poop bags as pick up is a must, and while the trail is shaded by trees, don’t forget to bring water for you and your pup.

Please NO RETRACTABLE LEASHES as we are walking in a group and the dogs and their humans can get tangled.

COVID-19 Precautions: Please download the LI-DOG COVID-19 Agreement and our Sign In Sheet and Liability Waiver BEFORE the Pack Walk™, sign both documents, and bring them with you to the Pack Walk. The fewer people we have standing around signing documents, the better!

LI-DOG Pack WalkTM at Calverton Pine Barrens State Forest – CANCELLED

Sun., March 29th, 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM
Parking at Veterans Memorial Park
5789 Middle Country Rd., Wading River, NY

(Google Map)

Please note that due to the coronavirus outbreak, we have cancelled this event. We are hoping to reschedule this Pack Walk for the Fall.

Please join LI-DOG for our first Pack Walk™ of the 2020 season as we visit the Calverton Pine Barrens State Forest, a forest reserve in Wading River, for the first time.

For our March LI-DOG Pack Walk™, we will be walking an approximately 2.5 mile section of a 7.6 mile loop trail. There is ample parking at Veterans Memorial Park, which is off Middle Country Rd. in Wading River. We will be meeting and starting our walk from Veterans Memorial Park. We will then walk by one of the old 10,000-foot runways that was part of the Grumman Flight Test Facility, before we turn south to follow the trail by Grumman Blvd.

Once on the Grumman Blvd. trail, we will walk to a small pond and through the woods, passing the Isaac Dog Park and finishing the walk back at Veterans Memorial Park. Though the trail has been rated moderate, the part we will be walking is a very easy walk as it is newly paved, perfectly flat and has no change in elevation.

The walk should take approximately 1 hour. For those who wish to walk further, please let one of our Pack Leaders know and we will try to have a group that will accommodate you. The extended walk, which will increase the length of the walk by approximately 3.5 miles, will go over to Grumman Memorial Park where several jets significant to that company are parked, before heading back.

PLEASE NOTE: Dogs MUST remain leashed AT ALL TIMES! Please do not bring Flexi Leads as we’ll be walking in groups and people and dogs can get tangled. Also, please bring water and poop bags – as cleanup is a must.

LI-DOG Pack Walk™ on the Nissequogue River Trail

Saturday, Nov. 16th, Noon to 1 PM
Nissequogue River State Park
St. Johnland Rd., Kings Park, NY

(Google Map)

Please join LI-DOG for our final Pack Walk™ of the 2019 season as we walk the Nissequogue River Trail and a section of the dog-friendly trail at Kings Park Bluffs. Our Pack Walks will resume in the spring.

For our November LI-DOG Pack Walk™, we’re planning a great 1.5-mile walk that offers a variety of scenery changes. We’ll start on a road that leads to a flat, wide gravel trail along the inlet for the Nissequogue River and then climb up some wooden stairs to a trail above the shoreline that has nice views over the water.

We’ll then cut over to the Kings Park Bluffs portion of our walk. To get to the bluffs, we’ll climb another flight of wooden stairs that will take us onto a wooded trail that goes along the top of the bluffs. These bluffs have great views over the Long Island Sound. After another third of a mile or so, many of us will turn around and walk back along the trail to our starting point.

The walk will take 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how long we stop to look at the views.

Those dog owners and their pups who don’t mind dealing with more steepness and hills, however, will have the opportunity to continue the walk along the bluffs. This part of the bluff trail is more challenging, for sure, but the views are incredible–some of the best on Long Island! (To see a map of the full hike, go to Trail Map Nissequogue 2019Final.)

Please join us for what should be a GREAT final LI-DOG Pack Walk™ of 2019, whether you’re looking for nice walk in the woods or something a bit more challenging!

PLEASE NOTE: Dogs MUST remain leashed AT ALL TIMES! Please do not bring Flexi Leads as we’ll be walking in groups and people and dogs can get tangled. Also, please bring water and poop bags – as cleanup is a must.
