Sponsored by Viewpoint Photography, Huntington

The 2016 Viewpoint Photography Holiday Pooch Photo Shoot is ON! Join LI-DOG for this special holiday photo session for dogs from noted photographer Pamela Setchell of Viewpoint Photography in Huntington. Get an unforgettable 5×7 finished portrait of your dog on a beautiful winter-themed set designed by Scarsella’s of Laurel Hollow—all for $40. Great NEW holiday cards and holiday card packages, extra prints, gift tags, ornaments and other items with your dog’s photo are also available for purchase.

A portion of the proceeds from this event will be donated to LI-DOG to support our work to get more access to public parks and beaches for Long Island dog owners and their dogs.

Since this is a special, discounted photo session, no appointment is necessary—it’s first-come, first-serve. However, in order to cut down on wait times, people with three or more dogs, special needs dogs, and those who want to get themselves or their family into the picture are asked to please call the studio at 631-421-1238 for an appointment. Additional photo sessions will be available the following day and a few days the following week.

Once again, A Rise Above Bake Shop (333 Main St., Huntington Village) is donating a big platter of their delicious homemade cookies for our human guests! Besides their yummy cookies, they also make great scones and a delicious sour cream chocolate cake. Stop by the shop before or after the Pooch Shoot for a yummy treat.

In addition, this year we welcome Deb’s Healthy Pet Center to the Pooch Shoot. Deb is providing her delicious all natural pet snacks and treats to ALL our canine guests! Check out the yummy dog treats Deb makes at Deb’s Healthy Pet Center.

Please note: The Pooch Shoot is back at the wonderful, old location, generously donated by TK’s Galley Restaurant, on Huntington Harbor, but it can be a bit hard to find. There are actually two 133 New York Avenues. If you haven’t gone straight through two traffic circles as you head north on New York Avenue, you haven’t gone far enough.

We hope to see you and your dogs on the 12th!

09/24/2016 – LI-DOG Pack Walk at Blydenburgh Park

LI-DOG Pack Walk™

Blydenburgh County Park

Sat., Sept. 24th, 11AM

Veterans Memorial Hwy, Smithtown (Google Map)

The LI-DOG Pack WalkTM at Blydenburgh County Park on Sat., Sept. 24th is on! The Suffolk County Parks Dept. has approved our permit to hold a group on-leash walk at the park. This will be LI-DOG’s first Pack WalkTM in a Suffolk County Park.

Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown is a beautiful, 627-acre park that has multiple trails for on-leash dog walking. For our Pack Walk, we’ve scoped out a great 1.6-mile walk along two broad, mostly flat dirt trails that are well shaded by trees. The walk will take approximately 35 to 40 minutes and will start and end on the big field next to the Blydenburgh Dog Park, where there is ample parking . There is a longer, 6-mile loop trail around Stump Pond in the middle of the park for anyone who’s more ambitious, but our Pack Walk on the 24th will stick to a shorter walk.

Please be aware that there can be horses on the trail, especially on the more northern trails in the park. In any case, dogs must be kept on leash at all times and, of course, be picked up after. Also, while there is water available in the dog park, you may want to bring water for you and your dog on the trail.

Please note that we have special requirements mandated by the Suffolk Parks Dept. for this Pack Walk:

  • We need to document that each of the dogs who comes on our walk has their rabies vaccination. The Parks Dept. is looking for the paper document the vet gives you when your dog is vaccinated—a Rabies Vaccination Certificate. These certificates should be either scanned and emailed to us at lidog_news@yahoo.com or faxed to us at 631-421-4080. We need to submit these certificates to the Parks Dept. by Thurs. afternoon, Sept. 22nd.
  •  We also have to pay a permit fee, which will cost us $3 per person. LI-DOG will pay the fee, but we’d appreciate any help you can give us in defraying our costs. Please see one of our Pack Leaders on Sat. to find out how.

Because of the deadline for proof of vaccination, RSVP’s for this walk will close at 2 p.m. on Thurs., Sept. 22nd.

To RSVP, go to
LI-DOG on Meetup
or email lidog_news@yahoo.com.

We’re looking forward to seeing you and your dog for our first Pack Walk at Blydenburgh County Park!

LI-DOG Sept. Meeting: Gearing Up to Make LI More Dog- Friendly

Thurs., Sept. 22nd, 7 – 9 PM

Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library

999 Old Country Rd., Plainview (Google Map)

Summer may have come to an end but with that LI-DOG is shifting into high gear as we move into the cooler months that scream (or should we say “bark”) for more outdoor activity with our furry best friends.  We have many campaigns well under way and some new ones, too, in addition to events and activities on the Fall agenda for Long Island dog owners and their fur kids.

If you’re tired of seeing those annoying “NO DOGS ALLOWED” signs, then please join us at our Sept. meeting to hear about how you can help to change that!

At LI-DOG, our mission is to continue to expand dog owner access to public parkland.  In addition to helping to create dog parks, LI-DOG also strives for more ON-LEASH access to public trails and parks as well as off-leash access to Long Island’s many miles of public beaches.

Join us as we discuss the grand opening of the new Newbridge Road Dog Park, our efforts to get small dog runs created at Nickerson Beach and Christopher Morley Dog Parks as well as the latest on Nassau County’s on-leash dog walking trails plus access to more parks in Huntington.  In addition, we’ll outline plans for our final three, very popular Pack Walks of the season plus upcoming October events including an LI-DOG brunch (with dogs) at The Refuge in Melville along with Barkfest and Dog Days at Old Westbury Gardens! (That’s Bailey in the photo above at last fall’s Dog Days at Old Westbury Gardens, which is coming up again soon!)

Please join us September 22nd and find out what interests you and how you can help to make it happen!

We’re really looking forward to seeing everyone on Wed., Sept. 7th for Bark in the Park with LI-DOG and the LI Ducks! (Tropical Storm Hermine should be out of town by then!) We will pick up everyone’s pre-paid tickets (those ordered on or before Aug. 5th) in the afternoon and starting at 5:30 p.m., we’ll have all pre-paid tickets with everyone’s name at the Picnic Gate Entrance, which is where people with dogs will enter the ballpark. We’ll do an LI-DOG Group Photo around 6 p.m. and we’ll be seated with our dogs in the sections closest to the Picnic Area. If anyone has questions, feel free to email us at lidog_news@yahoo.com or lidogevents@gmail.com.

Sat., Aug. 27th, 10 AM – 1 PM (Rain Date: Sun., Aug. 28th)

Pine Trail Preserve, NY Route 25, 1/6th of a mile east of William Floyd Parkway, Ridge, NY (Google Map)

Rescheduled from May. Hopefully the weather will cooperate this time!

Who’s ready for a hike with dogs? Back by popular demand, we have rescheduled LI-DOG’s Pack WalkTM & Hike on the Pine Trail to Sandy and Grassy Ponds for Sat., Aug. 27th (Rain date: Sun., Aug. 28th). This is a great 4.3-mile, out-and-back hike that goes through part of the Long Island Pine Barrens. The rewarding hike is known for its sights including the remains of a very hot brush fire in the mid-1980s and two beautiful ponds. The trail itself is mostly flat dirt, but opens up to a short sandy area crossing the power line section.

You can expect the hike to take three hours total. Don’t forget to bring water for you and your dog. Also, dress appropriately for the weather, but sneakers or hiking boots and pants are recommended. Also, as ticks are ubiquitous on Long Island, bring bug spray for yourself and tick medication/collar for your pup.

We look forward to seeing you and your dog on the Pine Trail on Saturday!

Please check back here Friday night or Saturday morning to confirm the Pack Walk is taking place as planned. Rain date is Sunday.

Enjoy America’s favorite past time with Fido at your side (or on your lap!) at Bark in the Park Night with LI-DOG on Wed., September 7th at Bethpage Ballpark in Central Islip. You and your fur baby can cheer on our hometown favorites, the Long Island Ducks, as they play their cross-LI Sound rivals, York Revolution, all while helping support LI-DOG!

Come early for group photos (gates open at 5:30), but if Fido is still embarrassed about his last haircut, then just be sure to come by 6:30.  Remember, only the first 1,500 guests get complimentary dog bowls from this year’s event sponsor, Atlantic Coast Veterinary Specialists.

Reserve your tickets NOW! Our deadline for orders is Fri., Aug. 5th.  Tickets are $15 per person** plus $5 for a Pooch Pass for your pup! All proceeds benefit LI-DOG’s work to get more access to parks and beaches for Long Island dog owners and their dogs.  Please note: Tickets are non-refundable.

**If you have a big dog, you might consider buying a $15 ticket for your dog (in addition to your own $15 ticket), so he or she can sit in a seat space. There’s no need to buy a Pooch Pass if you buy a $15 ticket for your dog. The $5 Pooch Pass allows your dog to sit next to you in your seat space.

Tickets can be reserved online. Select the type of ticket you want, then click the Buy Now button below to purchase your tickets for Bark in the Park with LI-DOG. If you want more than one ticket, you can adjust the amount on the PayPal order site. NOTE: the paypal button has been commented out to deactivate it.
