New Suffolk Dog Park to Open this Spring in West Sayville!
A new Suffolk County dog park located just off Cherry Avenue in West Sayville will open this Spring. Work started on clearing brush and debris from the area in November and a contract for the chain link fence has been issued, according to the Suffolk County Parks Dept. The new dog park will be the third dog park created since the passage of the Five New Dog Parks bill in 2007, and was made possible by legislation introduced by Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay (D-Holbrook), authorizing the issuance of $59,000 in bonds for the dog park.
The new dog park will be fenced and cover a 1.5-acre field. The County will create parking spaces for approximately 30 cars and will investigate the possibility of providing water to the site. At this point, the Parks Dept. is not planning on providing garbage collection at the new dog park. “It’s going to be carry-in, carry-out,” said Parks Commissioner Joseph Montuori, referring to a policy that requires dog owners to take out the waste generated by their dogs at the site. The Commissioner cited continuing budget cuts for the Dept.’s inability to provide waste removal service. The new dog park will be located just south of the Baymen Soccer Club fields, also on Cherry Avenue. The Parks Dept. has asked LI-DOG to make sure dog owners are aware that dogs are not allowed , even on-leash, anywhere on the Baymen Soccer fields. We’ll provide an update on exactly when the dog park is scheduled to open as soon as that information is made available.
