The Suffolk County Legislature’s Parks and Recreation Committee will vote on a bill to finance the construction of a dog park in Southaven County Park on Friday, Nov. 13th. The bill is the work of Leg. Kate Browning who has tried to create a dog park in Southaven County Park since 2006. The dog park would cover a 2.6 acre field in the southern part of Southaven County Park, which covers 1,356 acres of woods, fields and water in south central Brookhaven Township. It is a Suffolk County Park, so it is open to anyone who lives in the County. [Read more about Leg. Browning’s efforts to create a dog park in Southaven County park.]
Leg. Browning’s bill would tap $50,000 that was set aside to construct dog parks in the Capital Budget. However, there is resistance to Leg. Browning’s project. Moreover, if the money is not used now, it will be lost!
It is critical that dog owners turn out in support of Leg. Browning’s bill! The Suffolk County Legislature overwhelmingly passed a law to create Five New Dog Parks in Suffolk County in 2007. Only ONE new dog park has been created so far. It is time for Suffolk County to create more dog parks!
WHAT YOU CAN DO: Come to the Parks Committee Meeting on Friday, Nov. 13th at 1 p.m. at the William H. Rogers Legislature Bldg., 725 Veterans Memorial Hwy., Hauppauge. Parks Committee meetings generally last just ONE hour! Take off for lunch, come to the Legislature, and help your dog and other dog owners get a new dog park!
If you absolutely cannot make the Parks Committee meeting on Friday, Nov. 13th at 1 p.m., email or call your legislator and tell him or her that you support the dog park in Southaven County Park and we need more dog parks in Suffolk County! To see who your legislator is and get his or her email address, go to the article about Leg. Browning’s previous efforts to create a dog park in Southaven County Park. Or for phone numbers and more information about your legislator, go to the Suffolk County Legislators’ webpage at: http://legis.suffolkcountyny.gov/legislators.html
